AKARI Sencha
A vessel that glows softly, like a gentle light.
By shaping the patterned areas thinly, the traditional Japanese motifs appear almost like delicate openwork, allowing light to subtly pass through.
This set includes two pieces — one with glaze applied to the patterned sections, and one left unglazed — offering a contrast in texture and expression.
Created for moments of quiet tea,
this sencha cup invites you to pause and admire it again and again as you sip.
We invite you to hold this “Akari Sencha” up to the light —
from above and from the side —
and discover its subtle beauty.

For over a century, the kiln has remained dedicated to the principles of simplicity and strength, continuously producing functional ware for everyday use. Gohou Kiln’s pieces, characterized by their clean white aesthetic, honor the fundamental forms of tableware, resulting in timeless designs that never lose their appeal. Precisely because of these essential forms, great care is taken in the meticulous finishing of every detail—an aspect we invite you to appreciate. In 2019, participation in a project at the Tajimi City Design Research Institute marked a new chapter for the kiln. This experience led to a renewed focus on finely crafted forms, fresh perspectives in design, and the introduction of colored glazes—areas previously unexplored. Through this evolution, the piece known as “Akari Sencha” was born. Like a gentle light glowing from within, these sencha cups possess a delicate and graceful beauty. “Akari Sencha” is a special creation by Takuya Matsubara, the sixth-generation potter of Gohou Kiln, brought to life after nearly three years of dedication and refinement. Each piece is the result of countless hours spent working closely with the clay, through continual experimentation and careful craftsmanship. Within every cup lives the skill, passion, and spirit of Japanese artisanship.
