Okura Art China "Blue Rose" Porcelain Dinner Plates Set of Six

Sale price$395.00

A distinguished set of six dinner plates from the celebrated Blue Rose collection by Okura Art China, one of Japan's most revered porcelain manufacturers.

The Blue Rose pattern is created through Okura Art China's proprietary and highly refined technique. Following the initial firing of the fine white porcelain, cobalt pigment is meticulously applied by hand, and the piece is then fired once again at the exceptional temperature of approximately 1,460°C (2,660°F). This remarkable process allows the cobalt pigment to fuse directly with the glaze itself, becoming an integral part of the porcelain rather than merely resting upon its surface.

As a result, unlike conventional overglaze decoration, the blue possesses a unique depth, transparency, and luminosity, creating the impression that the color emerges from within the porcelain itself. The expression of each rose subtly changes according to the light and viewing angle, revealing layers of beauty and refinement with each glance.

One of the most remarkable qualities of the Blue Rose design is its ability to convey extraordinary richness using only a single cobalt blue. Through delicate gradations of tone, it captures the softness and vitality of rose petals while expressing elegance, serenity, and grace. This distinctive blue has become an enduring symbol of Okura Art China and continues to be admired by collectors and connoisseurs both in Japan and around the world.

When I first encountered this design, I must admit that I was not immediately captivated by it. The outlines of the roses appeared somewhat indistinct to me, and I initially regarded the decoration as slightly blurred rather than sharply defined. However, my perception changed completely over time. The more I studied the Blue Rose pattern, the more I began to appreciate its subtle beauty. Rather than relying on strong outlines, the roses are expressed through delicate gradations of cobalt blue. This creates a sense of softness, depth, and atmosphere that could not be achieved through more literal representation. What once seemed vague gradually revealed itself as something profoundly elegant. The blue appears to float quietly within the porcelain, changing character as light moves across the surface. Each viewing offers a slightly different impression, inviting prolonged contemplation. I now see Blue Rose as a masterpiece whose beauty cannot be fully expressed in words. It possesses a grace so refined that it defies simple description, quietly speaking to the viewer's sensibilities with every encounter. Beyond the extraordinary technical achievement for which Okura Art China is renowned, it is a work whose true character reveals itself ever more deeply the longer one contemplates it. For that reason, I believe it is truly deserving of the title of masterpiece.
